Community First was an £80million government-funded initiative which ran from April 2011 until March 2015.
About the programme
The programme helped communities come together to identify their strengths and local priorities in order to plan for their future and become more resilient. It was funded by the Office for Civil Society (OCS) in the Cabinet Office.
Community First consisted of two elements:
• Neighbourhood Matched Fund – a £30milion programme for some of the most deprived areas in the country and
• Endowment Match Challenge – a national £50million community endowment raising programme
A key role of the CVS is to position ourselves to maximise opportunities available for the sector arising from the Big Society agenda. As part of this the CVS successfully applied to the Community Development Foundation to host two local panels in the Pitsea wards.
During 2012/13 over £17,000 matched funding was invested in the target area. Throughout 2013/14 we helped invest £33,000 Community First money into activities in Pitsea North and South wards.
